A flu vaccine is the best protection against flu

It has been said for many years, that people 65 and older, are at high risk for developing serious complications from the flu. The risk is higher because of changes in immune defenses as we age. In recent years, for example, it’s estimated that between 70 percent and 85 percent of seasonal flu-related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older, and between 50 percent and 70 percent of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations have occurred among people in this age group. The best way to protect yourself and those around you from the flu and its potential serious complications is to get a flu shot.

Flu vaccines for the 2021-2022 flu season have been updated from last season’s vaccine to better match the viruses circulating. Immunity decreases over a year so annual vaccination is needed to make sure you have the protection that you need. Immunity may decrease more quickly in older people, so it is especially important that this group not get vaccinated too early. September and October are generally good times to be vaccinated.

In addition, if you have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine, talk to your provider. The more people vaccinated against these viruses; the more people protected. Do your part to keep your communities and loved ones safe, and get vaccinated!
