Pediatric therapy

Our pediatric rehabilitation professionals understand that every child's needs are different. The Pediatric Therapy Department at Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside consists of occupational, physical and developmental therapists and speech and language pathologists who provide services to children from birth to 14 years of age. Therapists are licensed by the State of Illinois and are credentialed with the early intervention system, the Division of Specialized Care for Children and their professional organizations.

Our therapists evaluate and provide ongoing services to children in our hospital and clinic, as well as in the home, within a limited distance from the hospital. Individual and group therapy sessions are available based on each child’s needs.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy helps children develop skills needed to function independently in their daily lives. This may include play, feeding, dressing and school participation. Specifically, occupational therapy tends to focus on arm/hand function and sensory integration issues.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy focuses on assisting children in the development of skills to help them function
safely and independently in day-to-day activities. This may include general mobility, school participation and play. Specific focus of physical therapy is on lower extremity functions, gross motor skills, gait and balance.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy focuses on improving a child’s overall communication skills, which includes the understanding of language, use of language and articulation of words. Our speech-language
pathologists also evaluate and treat a variety of children with oral motor and feeding disorders.
Other focuses of speech-language therapy include helping children with hearing impairments, voice disorders and stuttering.

Developmental therapy

Developmental therapy is play-based therapy in the home or center that promotes optimal
development in the areas of self-help, personal-social, language, cognition and motor skills.
