True or false?: Breastfeeding is second nature to new moms.

False. Breastfeeding is natural, but it isn't always easy. Many moms need help at first. Peer counselors, nurses, doctors and certified lactation consultants can show you what you need to know.

True or false? Breastfed babies are less likely to get sick.

True. Breast milk contains antibodies that protect babies from infections. Breastfed infants are protected from illnesses like ear infections, diarrhea and respiratory illnesses. They're also less likely to have allergies.

True or false? Breastfeeding can help new moms lose baby weight faster.

True. Breastfeeding helps burn excess calories. This helps you return to your pre-pregnancy weight more quickly. Breastfeeding also helps shrink your uterus down to normal size after childbirth. And it may lower your risk for diabetes, breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

True or false? Moms should not breastfeed past six months.

False. Exclusive breastfeeding is best for the first six months of a baby's life. But breastfeeding should continue up to a baby's first birthday, even as they start eating other foods. Breastfeeding can continue for as long as mom and baby would like.

True or false? It's normal for breastfeeding to be uncomfortable.

False. It's common to have some discomfort for a few days when you first start breastfeeding. But the right positioning and technique should help you avoid issues like sore nipples. If you have discomfort, talk to a lactation consultant or another healthcare provider.

In addition to breastfeeding education, our lactation consultants can address common breastfeeding concerns, such as:

  • Low milk supply
  • Difficulty latching onto the nipple
  • Sore or cracked nipples
  • Poor weight gain
  • Returning to work while breastfeeding

Lactation consultations and classes

Free, private breastfeeding consultations are available after your baby is born. You’ll receive personalized counseling and education. At this appointment the lactation consultant will take your history, weigh your baby, observe a breastfeeding session, assess any problems, provide support, and discuss a feeding plan individualized for you and your family.

Prenatal consultations are also available.

We serve all moms regardless of where you delivered your baby.

Breastfeeding support group

Mercyhealth’s breastfeeding support group meets every Wednesday, 10-11 am, on the fourth floor of Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside in Rockford. You can connect with other breastfeeding moms and babies, share your concerns and encouragement, and exchange practical information. Lactation consultants are available to answer your questions. Baby scales are also available to track your baby’s weight.

Meetings that fall on a holiday will be canceled. Please check the Mercyhealth Rockford Region Facebook page for any unforeseen cancelations.

Milk Depot
