RockCom Dispatch Center to Expand

What's new at Mercyhealth | Wednesday, September 15, 2021

RockCom, Mercyhealth’s communication center, will be expanding its footprint. The facility houses highly trained communication specialists that provide dispatch and coordination for Mercyhealth patients and area fire/EMS organizations.

RockCom is currently located on Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital–Rockton campus. In Fall 2021, the center will begin to expand its footprint by increasing the size by over 350%. Mercyhealth is committed to the west side of Rockford and is excited to expand RockCom at its current location on the Rockton campus.

RockCom provides 24- hour, 7-day-per-week dispatching services for the Durand Fire Department, Shirland Fire Department, Metro Ambulance, Pecatonica Fire Department, Win-Bur-Sew Fire Department, North Park Fire Department, Loves Park Fire Department, Rockton Fire Department, and South Beloit Fire Department.

The dispatch center staffs two phone lines for each agency, which includes fielding business and operational calls as well as serving as an answering service for the agencies.

RockCom greatly benefits patients with its close connection to the first responder community.

“RockCom’s expertise and understanding of the type of patient coming in and what specialty teams, if any, need to be notified,” said Matthew Smetana, Associate EMS Medical Director for Mercyhealth. “RockCom has been continuously dispatching EMS agencies in Winnebago County for more than 30 years.”

The expansion will allow for the hiring of additional dispatchers so RockCom can provide valuable, affordable services to additional agencies. The agencies can then focus funding on what matters most—the community and patient care.
