We offer
The Mercyhealth Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program offers:
- Small class size (six students)
- 15-month certificate curriculum accredited in abdominal-extended and obstetrical and gynecological sonography
- 12 unique rotations of integrated didactic and clinical courses
- Introductory coursework for vascular, breast and MSK sonography
- Exposure to other sonographic specialties (echocardiography, vascular, neurology, pediatrics, maternal-fetal medicine, special procedures and mammography)
- Interaction with medical staff in the clinical and classroom settings
- Knowledge and skills necessary to competently perform professional responsibilities in the field of sonography
Program goals
Upon completion of the Mercyhealth School of Sonography program, a new graduate will be able to accomplish the following:
- Obtain, review and integrate pertinent patient data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills during the performance of sonographic procedures to provide optimum diagnostic services
- Perform sonographic procedures appropriately and accurately recording all anatomic and physiologic information for interpretation by a physician
- Document and present complete and accurate sonographic findings to the interpreting physician in order to facilitate patient diagnosis
- Maintain optimal function of the sonographic equipment
- Assist physician during invasive ultrasound guided procedures
- Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients and all members of the health care team
- Provide compassionate patient care and education to promote overall well-being
- Act in a professional manner within recognized ethical and legal standards
- Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning

Upon successful completion of the diagnostic medical sonography program, graduates are awarded a certificate from the Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Graduates are then eligible to apply for the national certification examinations by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
