School of sonography

Mercyhealth's Javon Bea Hospital School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography is dedicated to providing quality education for its students in order to promote excellence in the art and science of sonography. Guided by the mission of Mercyhealth, the DMS Program strives to provide academic and clinical experiences that produce competent and compassionate sonographers with a commitment and passion to make lives better by performing quality imaging and the pursuit of lifelong learning. Our program works collaboratively with technologists and other healthcare professionals to prepare students with entry level employment skills to meet the needs of the community. The school offers a variety of clinical settings to diversify and enhance student learning and networking in its communities of interest.

Our program is a CAAHEP accredited, full-time, 15-month program. Applications are accepted from June 1–November 15, with a cohort starting every January.

We offer

The Mercyhealth Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program offers:

  • Small class size (six students)
  • 15-month certificate curriculum accredited in abdominal-extended and obstetrical and gynecological sonography
  • 12 unique rotations of integrated didactic and clinical courses
  • Introductory coursework for vascular, breast and MSK sonography
  • Exposure to other sonographic specialties (echocardiography, vascular, neurology, pediatrics, maternal-fetal medicine, special procedures and mammography)
  • Interaction with medical staff in the clinical and classroom settings
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to competently perform professional responsibilities in the field of sonography

Certification

Upon successful completion of the diagnostic medical sonography program, graduates are awarded a certificate from the Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Graduates are then eligible to apply for the national certification examinations by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

Program goals

Upon completion of the Mercyhealth School of Sonography program, a new graduate will be able to accomplish the following:

  • “To prepare competent entry-level general sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains.”
  • The program shall graduate competent, entry-level sonographers.
  • The program will provide the tools necessary for graduates to critically think and problem solve.
  • The program will provide education that promotes professionalism, ethics and communication.
  • The program shall address the needs of the community.

Cognitive

  • Obtain, review and integrate pertinent patient data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills during the performance of sonographic procedures to provide optimum diagnostic services

Psychomotor

  • Perform sonographic procedures appropriately and accurately recording all anatomic and physiologic information for interpretation by a physician
  • Document and present complete and accurate sonographic findings to the interpreting physician in order to facilitate patient diagnosis
  • Maintain optimal function of the sonographic equipment
  • Assist physician during invasive ultrasound guided procedures

Affective

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients and all members of the health care team
  • Provide compassionate patient care and education to promote overall well-being
  • Act in a professional manner within recognized ethical and legal standards
  • Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning

Program requirements

Tuition and fees

  • Tuition: $12,500 paid in full or $2,500 due five (5) days prior to the start of each quarter
  • $20 application fee
  • $70 aptitude testing (see Admissions Process for more information)

Other requirements
*Students are required to wear uniforms (solid royal blue) and shoes

Technology requirements

  • $150 (USD) fee for Trajecsys – timekeeping, competency, and administrative report logging system.
  • Laptop computer – to be used in seat every didactic session. Chromebooks not preferred due to possible compatibility issues.

Health file checklist

After acceptance into the program, the student must produce a physical health file within 30 days of program start. All costs are the responsibility of the admitted applicant.

  • Physical exam (Within the prior 12 months and yearly thereafter)
  • Drug screen (within 30 days of program start)
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Immunizations: rubella/hep B/Tdap/varicella/MMR
  • TB testing (Within the prior 12 months and yearly thereafter)
  • BLS CPR – available to admitted applicants during quarter I (free of charge)
