- PGY1 = $62,000
- PGY2 = $63,000
- PGY3 = $64,000
- Fellow = $66,000
Residents are allowed relocation assistance up to $2,500.
The first day of residency, each resident receives 15 paid vacation days per year and six paid holidays. Unused time does not accrue from year to year.
On the first day of residency, each resident receives six paid sick days. Sick time may be used for illness, injury, or need to obtain medical or dental treatment for the resident, spouse or children. Unused sick time does not accrue from year to year.
Meals are provided to all residents while on call in the Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center.
- PGY I: $750.
- PGY II: $1,500.
- PGY III: $1,500.
- SM fellow/hospitalist fellow: $3,000.
- Residents are reimbursed for approved educational travel expenses. Each year, the resident is allowed five paid days for approved conferences above and beyond the three weeks paid vacation time.
Ample in-house opportunities are available and encouraged for licensed physicians.
MercyCare Health Plans reimburses members up to $200 per person or $400 per family for qualified expenses for participating in a fitness and/or wellness program.
Residents are reimbursed for the cost of all licensing fees (e.g., Wisconsin state medical licensure and DEA). These licensures are required of each resident by the end of the second year. Residents are also reimbursed for the USMLE III testing fee. Mercyhealth also pays for registration for the following certifications: ACLS, PALS, ALSO and NRP.
You and Mercyhealth share responsibility for the cost of the medical care coverage for you and your dependents. The premium contribution depends upon the type of coverage you select. Health insurance is effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
Premiums are fully funded by Mercyhealth. Dental insurance becomes effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
Mercyhealth provides life and accidental death and disability insurance coverage equal to one time your annual earnings. These are effective the first of the month following 90 days of employment. Supplemental and dependent life options are also available.
This benefit allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars from your paycheck to pay for qualified medical and/or childcare/dependent expenses. This benefit requires annual enrollment and is effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
All residents have access to the EAP benefit at no cost. EAP provides assessment, consultation, short-term counseling and resources for personal and family matters.
Residents receive malpractice insurance coverage for any services performed within the scope of the duties of the hospital or the program.
Residents may contribute to Mercyhealth’s 403(b) matched savings plan.
Parking is free in the Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center physician lot and at our family medicine clinic.
Frequently asked questions
Here are the answers to some of the more commonly asked questions about Mercyhealth and the family medicine residency program.
- Yes. Applicants must register for the Match (NRMP). We do not accept applicants outside of the Match.
- You must have passed USMLE parts I and II (CS and CK) or Comlex I and II by the rank list deadline. We may not be able to rank you if we do not have your passing scores by the time that we submit rank list (typically February 15).
- We do not sponsor any visas. Applicants must maintain permanent residency status.
- Interview season runs from October to January. There will be no interviews during the week of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. We do offer lodging the night before the interview.
- We accept seven residents each year. We are looking for applicants with a strong commitment to family medicine, good communication skills and a strong work ethic. We consider ourselves to be family-friendly, and so also value applicants who will contribute to this atmosphere by working well with others.
- Yes, we use a night float system for our evening/night call. Night float blocks are two weeks long and interns have four-night float blocks per year.
- We serve a culturally and socioeconomically diverse patient population, including both insured and uninsured patients.
- Common office procedures, including, but not limited to, joint injections, excision of benign and malignant skin lesions, incision and drainage, toenail removal, punch and excisional biopsies, cryotherapy, suturing, casting, newborn circumcision, insertion of IUD, colposcopy, lumbar puncture, paracentesis, thoracentesis, intubation, and central line placement. Training in colonoscopy is also available. Mercyhealth also offers training in an advanced simulation lab.
- Yes, we offer moonlighting opportunities. Moonlighting can begin once a resident has completed their intern year and has received a State of Wisconsin permanent license. Mercyhealth has numerous opportunities to increase your medical knowledge to better prepare you for independent practice.
- Yes, we are a clinical rotation site for UW-Madison and St. George's University. However, we do accept students from other medical schools that are interested in rotating with us. Students will spend time in the family medicine outpatient clinic along with a hospital inpatient experience.
Less than a 10-minute drive. All of our Mercyhealth clinic locations in Janesville are relatively close. It does not take more than 20 minutes to get from one location to another.
